There was a running joke in our family:
“So if you were to win Miss World, what would you do to make the world a better place?”
“I would end child poverty/end world peace/save the world…through interpretive dance” . (We did a lot of dancing growing up, but I don’t even know why we found that funny. I guess you had to be there).
But watching the One Love Manchester stream, I started to think maybe that wasn’t such a crazy idea after all. Musical artists are not in politicians but last night they stood together because they knew they could use their particular skills to make a positive difference.
I find it’s easy to feel helpless when bad things happen outside of our control. And it’s easy for that to translate that into thinking “one day” when everything falls into alignment I will do something to make a difference (but until then it’s not worth trying).
But sometimes you just have to act. As soon as you think about it. And do whatever it is that is possible in that moment. Doing Just.One.Thing .
“If we do nothing…I can’t live with that. We must do something”. Ariana Grande.
Incidentally, whatever the goal, taking even a small step towards it immediately seems to increase success and efficacy.
This week, I was inspired by a friend taking the Acts-For-Peace ration challenge; living on the meagre rations distributed to refugees for a week. I don’t feel I could take the challenge myself at this particular point in time, but I could make a donation. So I did.
How can you make a J.O.T of difference?
